THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE AT HILLSBOROUGH LIBRARY, 379 S. BRANCH ROAD, HILLSBOROUGH TOWNSHIP NJ 08844. Author, Arthur S. Lefkowitz will talk about his book: "George Washington's Indispensable Men: Alexander Hamilton, Tench Tilghman, and the Aides-de-Camp Who Helped Win American Independence." While history has immortalized George Washington, it has largely forgotten those who helped to propel him to greatness—the thirty-two men who served as his aides-de-camp during the Revolutionary War. Washington relied heavily on these men—among them a young Alexander Hamilton—for help in formulating policy and strategy. "George Washington’s Indispensable Men" details the fascinating and sometimes tragic lives of these aides, providing a new and refreshing look at the American Revolution. Presenter: Arthur S. Lefkowitz is known for tackling offbeat but interesting subjects that present a research challenge. All of his books deal with some aspect of the American Revolution and his unique subjects include the story of the American Turtle submarine; the 1775 Arnold Expedition; the wartime exploits of Aaron Burr and George Washington's Revolutionary War aides-de-camp. His latest book is titled "George Washington's Revenge".

This event takes place at Bridgewater Library, 1 Vogt Drive, Bridgewater NJ 08807. Kitchen gardens in the 1700's fed, healed, and clothed Early American families. The 18th century "huswife" skill set included "physicke, cookery, distillation, perfumery, the making of wool, hemp, flax, dayries, brewing, baking," and, of course - gardening. Growing plants both Native American and from their homelands, these women turned their soup pots into the "melting pot" that is America and exemplified all the best qualities of plantswomen and patriots. Presenter: Lesley Parness - For the past 5 decades travel, academic studies, and work have provided a rewarding context for Lesley's love of plants. After a long career in museums and botanic gardens around the world she retired from her final post as Superintendent of Horticultural Education at New Jersey's Morris County Park Commission where she oversaw programming and interpretation at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Willowwood Arboretum and Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center.

Artists’ Eyes on the American Revolution: – Gilbert Stuart and His Portraits of the Founding Fathers
Artists’ Eyes on the American Revolution: – Gilbert Stuart and His Portraits of the Founding Fathers
This event will take place at Warren Township Library, 42 Mountain Blvd, Warren, NJ 07059. **This is part 1 of a 3 part series at Warren Township Library.** Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) produced over one thousand portraits in his lifetime, working in eight cities: Newport, Rhode Island; Edinburgh; London; Dublin; New York; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C. and Boston. Renowned for the accuracy of his facial likenesses, Stuart painted the most important Americans of his time, including presidents. One of his portraits of George Washington, for instance, is reflected in the current one-dollar bill. A charming conversationalist, to draw out his sitters’ personality (though not every story he told was true), and sometimes, irascible, Stuart became the most preeminent art authority in America. Presenter: Dr. Michael Norris got his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego and his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and has lectured on trips all over the world. He lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Inspired by the upcoming celebrations of America250, this program will chronologically explore the artistic life of John Trumbull (1756 – 1843), including his works of art from the tristate area. Blind in one eye and a graduate from Harvard College, Trumbull served in the American Revolutionary War, sketching maps for the military and serving as an assistant to Generals Washington and Gates. In 1780 and 1784, he left for London to study under the American Benjamin West, who encouraged him to paint miniature portraits and small scenes of the war. Trumbull went on to become one of the chief portrait artists in America—including creating portraits of George Washington—as well as the painter of huge scenes from the Revolutionary War, four of which now hang in the United States Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. John Singleton Copley (July 3, 1738– September 9, 1815) was an American-born painter, active in both the Thirteen Colonies and England. This is part 3 of a 3 part series. Created for REV250, and including works of art from the tristate region, this talk will follow the career of the greatest and most influential painter in colonial America, John Singleton Copley (1738-1815). Showing artistic talent as a teenager, Copley prospered in America by creating hundreds of portraits that were both striking in their precise realism and the importance of some of their sitters, such as Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams. Rising political turmoil in America, along with Copley’s dissatisfaction with the colonies’ limited art scene, brought him to London in 1774, followed by a trip to Europe. Copley then continued to create portraits of the elite in England, but also began producing something new—large, realistic, and dramatic scenes of contemporary history, often accompanied by prints to bring their images to the mass market. Presenter: Dr. Michael Norris got his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego and his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
