SUMMARY:Henry Knox's Amazing Journey - One of the Great Stories of the American Revolution ( VIRTUAL )
DESCRIPTION:* Use this link to join our virtual program: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84669859863 \nThe inspiring story of a little-known hero’s pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. During the brutal winter of 1775-1776\, an untested Boston bookseller named Henry Knox commandeered an oxen train hauling sixty tons of cannons and other artillery from Fort Ticonderoga near the Canadian border. He and his men journeyed some three hundred miles south and east over frozen\, often-treacherous terrain to supply George Washington for his attack of British troops occupying Boston. \nThe result was the British surrender of Boston and the first major victory for the Colonial Army. \nThis is one of the great stories of the American Revolution\, still little known by comparison with the more famous battles of Concord\, Lexington\, and Bunker Hill. Told with a novelist’s feel for narrative\, character\, and vivid description\, “The Noble Train” brings to life the events and people at a time when the ragtag American rebels were in a desperate situation. Washington’s army was withering away from desertion and expiring enlistments. Typhoid fever\, typhus\, and dysentery were taking a terrible toll. There was little hope of dislodging British General Howe and his 20\,000 British troops in Boston–until Henry Knox arrived with his supply convoy of heavy armaments. Firing down on the city from the surrounding Dorchester Heights\, these weapons created a decisive turning point. \nAn act of near desperation fueled by courage\, daring\, and sheer tenacity led to a tremendous victory for the cause of independence. \nThis exciting tale of daunting odds and undaunted determination highlights a pivotal episode that changed history. \nPresenter: William Elliott Hazelgrove is the National Bestselling author of ten novels and fourteen narrative nonfiction titles. His books have received starred reviews in Publisher Weekly Kirkus\, Booklist\, Book of the Month Selections\, Distinguished Book Award\, ALA Editors Choice Awards Junior Library Guild Selections\, Literary Guild Selections\, History Book Club Selections and optioned for the movies. He was the Ernest Hemingway Writer in Residence where he wrote in the attic of Ernest Hemingway’s birthplace. He has written articles and reviews for “USA TODAY”\, “The Smithsonian Magazine”\, “Daily Mail UK”\, and other publications and has been featured on “NPR All Things Considered”. “The New York Times”\, “LA Times”\, “Chicago Tribune”\, CSPAN\, “Variety USA Today” have all covered his books with features. His books “Tobacco Sticks”\, “The Pitcher”\, “Real Santa”\, and “Madam President” have been optioned for screen and television rights. His book “Madam President: The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson” is currently in development. The option on “The Pitcher” was fully executed when the script was approved.

SUMMARY:Joseph Warren: Had He Survived the American Revolution - The Name of Washington Might Be Obscure (VIRTUAL)
DESCRIPTION:* Use this link to join our virtual program: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86171095302 \nWarren Township NJ was named after Joseph Warren who was a hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. \nJoseph Warren was the foremost Patriot leader in 1775. He alone made the decision to ignite the American Revolution when he sent his good friend Paul Revere to call out the militia to confront the British in Lexington and Concord. Warren then worked tirelessly to bring military and governmental order out of chaos in the weeks leading to his ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of Bunker Hill. British General William Howe declared Warren’s life equal to 500 ordinary colonials. \nIt was Warren who united the First Continental Congress. \nIt was Warren who implored his friends in Philadelphia to appoint a commander in chief—even suggesting that George Washington be that man.\n(Washington himself referred to Warren as the commander in chief.) \nStreets\, towns\, and counties have been named for him—and for more than a century every schoolchild in America knew his story. \nToday\, the true story of this extraordinary man lies buried beneath the dust of time. \nJoseph Warren was the essence of Liberty. \nPresenter: Janet Uhlar. \nAuthor\, lecturer\, and screenplay writer\, Janet’s genre is rarely seen. She is the author of two books on forgotten heroes of the American Revolution: “Liberty’s Martyr: The Story of Dr. Joseph Warren”\, and “Freedom’s Cost: The Story of General Nathanael Greene.”\nHer passion for the American Revolution is evident. In her writing\, Janet presents biography through the living\, breathing form of biographical fiction. The characters lived; the events occurred. The dialogue carries the stories. Janet firmly believes that when the private lives and unique personalities of historical figures are presented\, and the dynamics between these characters brought out\, history becomes much more than cold black print on a stark white page. History takes on a life of its own\, with true flesh and blood individuals whose acts of courage\, indifference\, or cowardice shaped the world we live in today. This living history helps us relate to those who have gone before – offering inspiration\, courage\, and a sense of determination. \nJanet supervised the Joseph Warren Sash Project\, served on the Board of Trustees of the Nathanael Greene Homestead\, and on the advisory board of the Mulberry Grove Foundation (General Greene’s home in Savannah\, GA). Her lecture on Nathanael Greene inspired the Valley Forge Monument Project by the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution in which she took an active part. Janet has boldly refuted defamatory narrative created by contemporary authors\, with no substantial documentation\, against Joseph Warren and Nathanael Greene’s wife Catherine. She is involved in various historical preservation activities as well as in the research and challenge of falsehoods in historical narrative.\nJanet has spoken extensively\, and to a wide variety of audiences including:\n– State of Rhode Island”s dedication of the “General Nathanael Greene Bridge”\n– Bunker Hill National Historical Park\n– Adams National Historical Park\n– USS Constitution\n– Rhode Island Historical Association\n– Rhode Island Genealogical Society\n– Triennial of the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution\n– Congress of the National Society of New England Women\n– Northeast Regional Conference on the Social Studies\n– Friends of Valley Forge\n– Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge\n– Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan River\n– SAR New England celebration of the Victory at Yorktown\n– Battle of Rhode Island Association\n– Rev250 Boston\n– SAR\, DAR\, SR chapters throughout the country\n– Masonic lodges throughout the country\n– Academy of Lifelong Learning\, Cape Cod Community College–six week course on American Revolution
