Black Arts & Ideas Festival

Join Downtown Somerville Alliance for a day long festival celebrating Black History Month 2024. The Downtown Somerville Black Arts & Ideas Festival will include special conversations, panels, performances and activations in solidarity and support of the Black community in Somerville and beyond. The Black Arts & Ideas Festival will take place on Saturday February 24, 2024, from 10 am – 6:00 pm at various locations in Downtown Somerville, New Jersey. All events are free of charge to attend. 10:30-12: Reclaiming Paul Robeson; A Community Conversation. Moderated by Hettie V. Williams, P.h.D. Discuss the importance of erecting a statue to honor Paul Robeson’s legacy with historians, artists, and community members. Inspired by Black church family photos each family will have 5 – 10-minute mini photo shoot and will leave with a professional photo with professional backdrop and lighting by a local photographer. Event Series Maple Sugaring

Maple Sugaring

Maple Sugaring at The EEC Maple sugaring is a tradition in the Northeast that began centuries ago with the Native Americans and Colonists. People of all ages are invited to see this tradition brought to life at the Environmental Education Center (EEC). You will see how trees are tapped, view sap-collecting methods past and present, and see the boiling process that produces delicious New Jersey maple syrup. This 60-minute, outdoor program is conducted at our Sugar Shack, a ½-mile hike from the EEC. Please arrive at the EEC 30-40 minutes before the program start time to purchase tickets and hike to the Sugar Shack to meet your Naturalist.  Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Boots are recommended as the trails can be wet, muddy, and/or covered by snow. Tickets cost $6 per student/senior and $7 per adult.

Open Studio Saturdays

Open Studio Saturdays with Frontline Arts February 24th from 12pm-3pm and then every third Saturday Members: $15 Non-Members: $25 Materials: You Provide Open Studios is a monthly event designed for community members to come together and create. It is not a led class, but rather an opportunity for those who have taken other classes to continue their creative process. During these sessions, up to five people can work in the studio at a time. To reserve equipment and workspace, participants must sign up online. This three-hour event allows participants to work on their projects while creating alongside others. It is not a class for learning new techniques, but it is a chance to build upon previous classes, skills, and techniques. A print-shop monitor will be present during the sessions to oversee equipment usage and answer general questions. The monitor can guide equipment usage, but will not offer detailed technical instructions or demonstrations. NJ Audubon: Paint Your Own Gourd

Led by Bonnie O’Connor, Art Teacher, and Stephanie Punnett, Program Director. Paint your own gourd birdhouse for the cavity nesting birds returning from their winter homes this spring. Bonnie, retired art teacher with 40 years' experience, will give a demonstration on painting technique, and help you along with your painting. All materials provided. Information on growing your own gourds will be provided. Hang your decorative gourd birdhouse in your backyard and enjoy watching the new resident raise their young! Wind Chime Making Workshop

Wind Chime Making Workshop In this workshop, you will assemble a wind chime using different metal shapes and beads to create a work of art! Our helpful staff will guide you in the best way to creatively make your wind chime! All items needed to make one wind chime are provided, including weather resistant stringing material and a pack of assorted beads. You are welcome to bring any special beads you may like to add to your piece! The Windchime is comprised of shapes, skillfully cut from metal sheets. Glass beads help add color and personality. All of the components, when combined with waxed cord, creates a work of art! Proudly display them outside in your garden, on the front porch, or as décor inside your home. This is a great workshop for both teens and adults. No tools or experience is needed. Pictured, you can see what is provided... We have six themed wind chimes to choose from: FALL MOON, OWL, MOM, BEE, BUTTERFLY, and BUNNY!
