Got an amazing musical talent you’ve been wanting to share? Want to just play a few songs in an amazing space? Intro to Birding Woodpeckers, wrens, and waxwings—Oh my! Learn the basics of bird identification using visual and behavioral cues, along with some common songs and vocalizations. Each participant will receive a basic guide to the common birds of Duke Farms. It’s a great way to get to know our feathered friends while learning more about the natural habitats that support them. Bring binoculars if you have them. We will also be suggesting apps on your phone that you might enjoy using. This program is appropriate for adults. Please dress for the weather, this class is entirely outdoors. Long pants and tick deterrents are recommended. Participants should expect to be walking about 2 miles on various trail types for the full duration of the class. Meet in front of the Farm Barn Orientation Center for check-in. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes before the start of class. We cannot accommodate late arrivals and the class will depart on time. Program Preparation Please dress for the forecasted weather and bring water and anything else you may need. This class is entirely outdoors. Participants should expect to travel about 2 miles on pavement, gravel, or flat trails for the full duration of the class. Walkin’ in the Pines at The EEC (Adult) Join us for some easy walking down in the amazing Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Our travels may include Whitesbog Village, the Evert Nature Trail, the Franklin Parker Preserve, and/or Lebanon State Forest. We will hike several miles, at an easy pace, while doing some birding. Bring lunch, binoculars, and, of course, dress for the weather. Participants will meet at the EEC, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge, NJ (bus transportation provided). Mold, Sculpt, and Glaze a Flower Serving Bowl with Burnt Mills Pottery Roll, mold, sculpt and paint a slab of clay into a beautiful flower under the guidance of experienced clay artists. Pen & Ink Techniques Explore pen and ink in this one-day workshop to create bold and vibrant drawings. Delve into traditional and contemporary pen and ink applications as you learn and experiment with a variety of mark-making techniques. Students will create compositions that will bring objects to life on paper. Mardi Gras Cocktail Class at Stone House Join for the Mardi Gras Cocktail Class at Stone House -where the mixologist will teach you how to expertly craft 3 different cocktails step-by-step, each inspired by the rich history of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, paired with a variety of lite bites. Hurricane The Hurricane cocktail a well-known New Orleans tradition. The drink was invented in the French Quarter in the 1940s and is considered the quintessential Mardi Gras cocktail. Vieux Carré The Vieux Carré is a classic Cognac cocktail originating in New Orleans after the Noble Experiment, Prohibition. Born at the Carousel Bar in the New Orleans Hotel Monteleone, it has a combination of flavors that make it an exceptionally balanced cocktail. Animal Portraitures In this one-day workshop students will learn how to depict a variety of animals with focus on proportion, form, texture, and color. Demonstrations in various media and subject matter will be given. Students may work in any medium they prefer and can either work from the reference given by the instructor or their own reference. Succulent and Cacti Planting with Blooms at Belle Mead “The Earth without Art is just…. Eh.” Become your own artist, using plants as your media, during this workshop! You will learn what plants best suit your needs (depending on the setting, lighting, water requirements, etc.) and how to arrange them in interesting and artistic ways. Fist you will see examples of terrarium and planter styles. Then, you can decide if you want to create your own! Our staff will provide guidance as you build your masterpiece! We have a variety of plant options from our greenhouse collection, Pottery and terrariums to choose from, and plenty of accessories to add the finishing touch. Building a terrarium is the perfect way to introduce nature into your home by providing a little ecosystem designed for your plants, whether they be ferns or succulents. Maple Sugaring at The EEC Maple sugaring is a tradition in the Northeast that began centuries ago with the Native Americans and Colonists. People of all ages are invited to see this tradition brought to life at the Environmental Education Center (EEC). You will see how trees are tapped, view sap-collecting methods past and present, and see the boiling process that produces delicious New Jersey maple syrup. This 60-minute, outdoor program is conducted at our Sugar Shack, a ½-mile hike from the EEC. Please arrive at the EEC 30-40 minutes before the program start time to purchase tickets and hike to the Sugar Shack to meet your Naturalist. Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Boots are recommended as the trails can be wet, muddy, and/or covered by snow. Tickets cost $6 per student/senior and $7 per adult. |
