NJ Audubon: Animal Signs in Winter
Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, United StatesBring the family for this indoor/outdoor program to learn about animal signs in winter. Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist Animals are all around us, even in our own backyards! Animals leave behind signs they’ve visited, and clues for us to study. Indoors we'll observe insect galls and mammal scat, then outdoors we'll go for a walk to look for signs and tracks. Learn how animals cope in the cold winter months. Craft activity included. The Abraham Staats House Presents: General George Washington & “The American Revolution”

Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026 3PM ~ 5PM $10 per person Kick off the New Year and America’s 250th birthday, with this special program about our nation’s history! General George Washington, brought to life by Washington expert and portrayer Samuel Davis, speaks to us about his experiences during the Battles of New York in 1776, the American army’s retreat through New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, and the dramatic “Ten Crucial Days,” that changed the course of a struggling young nation’s history. The General will touch on the Middlebrook Cantonment of 1778-79, when his American army stayed in winter quarters in this area. General Washington will also discuss the “miraculous achievements” of “Drillmaster” Baron von Steuben, who used the Abraham Staats House as a military headquarters during the final months of the Cantonment. House open for seating at 3PM, presentation: 3:30PM. After his remarks, General Washington will join guests to answer questions and socialize. Enjoy light refreshments, live music, tours of the historic Abraham Staats House, until the house closes at 5PM. Northern Harriers and Short-Eared Owls Walk

Start 2026 off right, looking for Northern Harriers and Short-eared Owls around Duke Farms. Grab your favorite adventure buddy and join us for a bird walk on Saturday, January 24 from 3-5 pm. We will also look out for other raptors, wading birds, songbirds, waterfowl, and anyone else on the campus. About the Instructor Lindsay McNamara has over 12 years of experience working in conservation, environmental nonprofit communications and development. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and an M.A. in Public and Organizational Relations. She has been birding since she was nine years old when she saw her first Great Blue Heron along the Raritan River. She’s been leading bird walks since 2018 and is always looking to engage new birders in her lifelong passion.
