Brunch, Brews, and Colonial Homes

Brunch, Brews, and Colonial Homes

Rich in Revolutionary history and a buzzing dining scene, Somerville offers the perfect blend of past and present. Visitors can trace George Washington’s footsteps at the Wallace House, admire centuries-old architecture, and then indulge in everything from elevated brunch to contemporary Italian cuisine. It’s a destination that proves heritage and flavor are equally worth savoring.

Begin your day with a relaxed, flavorful brunch at Brunch by De Martino on Davenport Street. With its mix of classic American breakfast and creative Latin?inspired dishes (think Tres Leches French Toast, Short Rib Birria Tacos) and a BYOB policy, it’s a warm, inviting way to kick off.

After brunch, walk to the Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage complex. It’s a quick 10-minute walk – or drive on over as there is a parking lot connected to the site. These are rich in Revolutionary War era history: George Washington used Wallace House as his headquarters, and the Old Dutch Parsonage (built 1751) adds context about religious and educational life in colonial times.

Drive about 15–20 minutes out of Somerville to the Andrew Ten Eyck House in Branchburg. Built in the early 19th century and expanded in 1914, this house shows Federal and Colonial Revival architecture. It’s been restored and serves as a local history museum.

Stop at Bellemara Distillery in Hillsborough. Inspired by Scottish traditions, Bellemara crafts small-batch whiskeys and gins in a modern, welcoming tasting room. A flight or cocktail here adds a spirited twist to your day and showcases another side of Somerset’s thriving craft beverage scene.

Visit the Abraham Staats House in South Bound Brook. It’s a colonial era home, one of the older ones in the area, and gives more insight into colonial life, architecture, and early settler history.

For dinner stop at Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant in South Bound Brook. This is the new restaurant by Giovanni LaCorte (of Joe’s Meat Market fame). The menu features refined Italian/American classics: homemade pastas, veal Milanese, etc. A great stop for a lighter Afternoon snack or even early dinner if you decide to shift things.

Top off the evening back at downtown Somerville with drinks at Verve, a staple of the downtown dining scene with a lively French brasserie vibe.
