Welcome World to George Washington’s Rockingham
Rockingham State Historic Site 84 Laurel Avenue, Franklin Township, United StatesNew Jersey welcomes the world to Rockingham State Historic Site for the 250th Birthday of the United States. Visit the historic New Jersey Dutch Barn for an illustrated introduction to George Washington’s final headquarters of the Revolutionary War. Handle reproduction artifacts of the Revolutionary War. Sign up for tours of the grounds. Rockingham was George Washington's final wartime headquarters. Arriving from New York, Washington stayed at Rockingham from August 23, 1783 and left November 10, 1783. While at Rockingham, Washington entertained guests, issued his Farewell Orders to the Army, and learned the United States became formally independent with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The historic house remains closed due to construction for stabilization of the south elevation. ? Revolution NJ is New Jersey’s official observance of the 250th anniversaries of New Jersey’s first Constitution July 2, 2026 and the American Revolution in New Jersey from 2024 – 2033.

Following George Washington’s Footsteps: Franklin 250 Hike and Tour of Rockingham
Franklin Township Municipal Complex 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset, NJ, United StatesJoin the Franklin Trails Advisory Committee (TAC) for a combined hike and historic house tour. Franklin was at the center of the action during the American Revolution – from the victories at Trenton and Princeton through the end of the conflict. This special America 250 event combines a leisurely hike with commentary about the area’s importance in the Revolution and a guided tour of Rockingham, George Washington’s final wartime headquarters. Patrick Murray, TAC member and former president of the Crossroads of the American Revolution Association, leads the hike. Paul F. Soltis, historian for Rockingham State Historic Site, hosts the historic house tour. The Rockingham Association serve as friends of Rockingham State Historic Site. ? Hands on Documents – Reading and Writing in Colonial America
THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT MONTGOMERY LIBRARY, 100 COMMUNITY DRIVE, SKILLMAN, NJ 08558. Come learn about reading, writing and education in Colonial America with a hands-on display of original and reproduction books, newspapers, printing type, and more! Appropriate for ages 4+. Discover the science behind preserving historic documents, try your hand at creating your own document by writing with a hand-cut quill pen and ink made from an 18th century recipe, or fold and seal a letter to take home. Presenter: Ben Bartgis is a conservator based in Annapolis, MD who loves bringing conservation science out of the lab and into historic sites, schools, and more through living history demos and activities. They received their MA in Preventive Conservation from Northumbria University, a certificate from Rare Book School at the University of Virginia, and participated in the Revolution in Books NEH Summer Institute at Florida Atlantic University in 2022.
