Catalan Music Program

NJ, United States

This concert offers the opportunity to discover three Catalan composers who developped their careers partially in the United States: Joan Manén (1883-1971), Marc Migó (1993-), and Lluis Benejam (1914-1968). Their unique styles merge the Mediterranean light with American influences. Similarly, the performers involved in this concert represent the two involved nations (Bethany Bobbs comes from The United States, while Daniel Blanch and Kalina Macuta come from Catalonia.) They will merge their musicality to showcase the stylistic richness that characterizes the music of the three featured composers.

This is a beautiful, knowing play about friendship that will provide an evening of enchantment.

Three Early Black American Women in Words: A Literary Historic Houses Tour

NJ, United States

250 years ago in the spring of 1773 Phillis Wheatley traveled from America to England to publish Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, making her the first published African-American poet and the first African-American female published writer. This historic houses tour of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage introduces the works of three early Black American women in words, considering Phillis Wheatley’s poetic perspective on the American Revolution, Hetty Saunders’ solace and stewardship of nature in New Jersey in the early American republic, and Sojourner Truth’s African Dutch social and spiritual heritage as background to her activism through the nation’s Civil War.

Lemko “Drop-Pull” Pysanka Workshop

NJ, United States

During the period of Lent preceding Pascha, or Easter, Ukrainians write pysanky, or decorate eggs, using ancient symbols. From the deep past, these patterns were thought to imbue the egg with magical powers and ward away evil spirits, and they later took on Christian meanings. Join us at the Center to continue this age-old tradition as we get ready to welcome spring. The workshop is open to adults and children 12 and older. All materials included. Seating is limited to 15 participants per session, so register early! The UHEC and the Exhibit "Ukraine 1933: A Cookbook" will be open hours indicated. Workshop will be taught by Marko Lyszyk Questions, contact the UHEC at 732-356-0132 or email education@ukrhec.org Donations are gratefully accepted.
