Arabella Barlow Day: Civil War Soldier’s Encampment & Surgeon’s Demonstration
Arabella Barlow, born and buried in Somerville, was a great-granddaughter of the Wallace and Hardenbergh families of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites, offering one of the “mystic chords of memory” crossing New Jersey history from the American Revolution to the Civil War. On the grounds of Wallace House State Historic Site, enter a small Civil War encampment and encounter a New Jersey soldier’s experience of the Civil War. In our Sign of the Red Lion Interpretive Center, meet a surgeon of the 4th N.J. Volunteer Reg't and see a demonstration of Civil War medicine. Historical exhibits and discussion share new and continuing research uncovering Somerville’s Civil War heroine Arabella Barlow in New Jersey women’s history. Admission is free. Come and go throughout the afternoon. This program is part of a series made possible the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association with the sponsorship of New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. 2024 Summer Concert Series Join for the Summer Concert Series at Duke Island Park, where music lovers of all ages come together to celebrate a variety of genres and eras. From classic rock to jazz, country to pop, each concert promises a memorable summer experience . Admission and parking are free. Park Rangers will help guide parking, offering closer spots to those with handicaps. A selection of food trucks will be onsite and may vary from week to week. Visitors are welcome to bring your own cooler with snacks and drinks. Alcohol and smoking are not permitted in the park. Don't forget to bring your own lawn chair or blanket to relax and immerse yourself in the music-filled atmosphere. Taking place on Tuesday afternoons from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at 120 South Branch Road in Hillsborough, the market will feature wholesome foods and items from area vendors. “The purpose of the market is to offer fresh food and products to Somerset County and neighboring regions,” said Megan Norz, the farm market manager. The market will take place rain or shine, except in the event of severe weather. Returning vendors include Gramps Kitchen, Hot Graham Sauce Company, Lulu Artisanal Lemonade, Paolo's Kitchen, Pickle Culture, Pies & Quiches, Schiefersteins Farm, Smart Buy Natural Foods, and Sutton Farms. • Joining us this year are AquaSprout Farms, Barking Good Bakery, Complex Herbal Blends, Pourtuga Coffee House, Raining Sprinkles Bake Shop, River Valley Community Grains, Wood Box Soap, and Zell’s Farm.
