Artists’ Eyes on the American Revolution: – John Trumbull’s Paintings of U.S. History

This is part 2 of a 3 part series. John Trumbull was an American painter and military officer, best known for his paintings of the Revolutionary War, of which he was a veteran. He has been called the "Painter of the Revolution". Inspired by the upcoming celebrations of America250, this program will chronologically explore the artistic life of John Trumbull (1756 – 1843), including his works of art from the tristate area. Blind in one eye and a graduate from Harvard College, Trumbull served in the American Revolutionary War, sketching maps for the military and serving as an assistant to Generals Washington and Gates. In 1780 and 1784, he left for London to study under the American Benjamin West, who encouraged him to paint miniature portraits and small scenes of the war. Trumbull went on to become one of the chief portrait artists in America—including creating portraits of George Washington—as well as the painter of huge scenes from the Revolutionary War, four of which now hang in the United States Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. Welcome World to George Washington’s Rockingham
Rockingham State Historic Site 84 Laurel Avenue, Franklin Township, United StatesNew Jersey welcomes the world to Rockingham State Historic Site for the 250th Birthday of the United States. Visit the historic New Jersey Dutch Barn for an illustrated introduction to George Washington’s final headquarters of the Revolutionary War. Handle reproduction artifacts of the Revolutionary War. Sign up for tours of the grounds. Rockingham was George Washington's final wartime headquarters. Arriving from New York, Washington stayed at Rockingham from August 23, 1783 and left November 10, 1783. While at Rockingham, Washington entertained guests, issued his Farewell Orders to the Army, and learned the United States became formally independent with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The historic house remains closed due to construction for stabilization of the south elevation. ? Revolution NJ is New Jersey’s official observance of the 250th anniversaries of New Jersey’s first Constitution July 2, 2026 and the American Revolution in New Jersey from 2024 – 2033.
