Stanley Gavidia, June Artist of the Month

This June, Gallery on Main's Artist of the Month series features oil paintings by Bloomfield, New Jersey-based artist Stanley Gavidia. His work will be on view, and available for purchase, from June 1 through 30, 2022. Meet the artist at a free opening reception on Saturday, June 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Before moving to New Jersey, Hugo Stanley Gavidia Tolentino grew up in El Salvador, and he studied visual art at National Art Center of El Salvador (CENAR). He has participated in many collective exhibitions, including at Studio Montclair Inc, Artfront Galleries, Open Doors Newark, Bronx Pre¬ Biennale Art, Queens Museum, and Hamilton Street Gallery, among others. In his artwork Mr. Gavidia communicates knowledge through basic concepts of vitality and universal values. He also attempts to convey insight into the truth through an exaltation of the mind or the soul. Says the artist, “I can't say anything concrete about painting, what happens on the canvas is unpredictable and surprising to me. Each painting suggests something. Once I sense the suggestion, I begin to paint intuitively and when the painting is finished, the subject reveals itself. I leave it to the spectator to fix meaning. It can always be

Garden State Watercolor Society’s “Small but Mighty” Art Exhibition at Farmstead Arts

Garden State Watercolor Society’s “Small but Mighty,” the 4th Annual small works art exhibition, will be on display June 12 to July 17 at Farmstead Arts Center, 450 King George Road, Basking Ridge, NJ. The exhibit features the works of fifty-two Garden State Watercolor Society artists with a total of 99 small works. Paintings consist of original water media (watercolor, acrylic, gouache, casein, or egg tempera) on paper, Claybord, or Yupo. Artworks measure 10” or less on any side. Paintings in the exhibit were juried for $500 in prizes by Lena Shiffman, children’s book illustrator and watercolor instructor. Opening day is Saturday, May 28th and the season will run through December 10th. The market hours are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM through the end of October, and 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM during November and December. Note: the Farmers Market will not be held on October 15th, the day of the Far Hills Races.

FOREST BATHING

The Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, which translates as "forest bathing” is intended to help foster a connection with nature that feeds the mind, body, and spirit. Join yoga instructor Megan Soucy for a forest bathing experience at Colonial Park Gardens. The experience will include an easy, slow hike through the gardens and arboretum. It will also include meditation and centering sessions, intended to encourage the nurturing qualities of being present within nature. Participants are encouraged to bring a small blanket or towel to sit on, water, and suitable shoes for walking. Please meet at the entrance of the Colonial Park Rose Garden, Parking Lot A. Pre-registration and payment is required by June 15. Limited to 12 people.

Music in the Somerset Hills and The Ross Farm present: Summer Solstice Music Festival June 18, 2022 at The Ross Farm, Basking Ridge, NJ The Summer Solstice Music Festival will feature a variety of musical offerings spanning multiple genres and traditions. The mainstage event will be a riveting performance of Carl Orff’s thrilling choral masterpiece, "Carmina Burana," in a popular arrangement for two pianos, percussion, three virtuosic vocal soloists, and a large chorus. The day kicks off with Americana and 60's rock from "Just Married" and ends with dancing to heartland rock, Memphis soul, and modern pop with "Nick Ryan and the Mess." Throughout the day there will be family activities, food trucks and vendors, and featured art by local artists. General admission is $25 and reserved seating is $50. Students of any age are welcome to attend free of charge! Gates open at 5pm. Parking is onsite. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs, blankets, and refreshments. *Rain date is June 19 *If applicable, state and local COVID-19 protocols will be observed

The Lord Stirling Theater Company will perform “Cobb” in the English Barn Theater at the Farmstead Arts Center, 450 King George Road, Basking Ridge, NJ. “Cobb” will open on Friday, June 17, at 7:30PM, with additional performances on June 18 at 7:30PM, June 19 at 4:00PM, June 24 and 25 at 7:30PM, and June 26 at 4:00PM. Tickets are $25 general admission, $23 for seniors (65 and over) and students, $20 for Farmstead Arts members, and $15 for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased online at https://farmsteadartscenter.org or at the door (cash only). “Cobb” by Lee Blessing examines the character of controversial baseball legend Ty Cobb at three different stages of his life—The Peach, aged nineteen, at the beginning of his long career with the Detroit Tigers; Ty, a shrewd investor in his early forties, at the end of his playing days; and Mr. Cobb, an elderly man hoping to secure a positive legacy, at the point of death from cancer. These different versions contend with each other over who Ty Cobb really was and what he represented. Oscar Charleston, a player in the Negro Leagues who was dubbed the “Black Cobb” by the press, appears as a challenge
