Prominently featured is the steam transfer process called eco-dying in which leaves, ferns and other natural elements are printed using tannins, soot and ink over a steam tray. The prints are then colored and covered with an encaustic mix. Also shown are cyanotypes made using a traditional photographic process developed by the scientist John Herschel and later utilized to document botanicals by photographer Anna Atkins who is considered the first person to illustrate a book with photographic images. Other pieces included in the show utilize various other printing processes. An artist from an early age, Madson learned drawing from her mother while her father taught her geology.
