Join the Heritage Trail Association on its Middlebrook Five Generals Tour. This popular tour has been a favorite for many years. You will visit all five existing houses where George Washington, Henry Knox, Baron Von Steuben, Nathaniel Greene, and Lord Alexander were headquartered during the Middlebrook Cantonment of 1778-79. Abraham Staats House, Jacobus Vanderveer House, Wallace House, Van Veghten House and the Van Horne House are on the tour.
Checking in at the Van Horne House, you will board the bus and head out on your tour of Somerset County’s famous historic houses where you will meet docents and get a snapshot view of the house and its history. If you have lived here all your lives and have not visited the houses, this is the time to see them all! Even though the tour will last two and a half hours, you will be asking to stay longer! If you have taken the tour before, there will be something new. If you have not been on this tour yet, be ready to be amazed!
Delaware and Raritan Canal Bus Tour: Explore the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Somerset County via luxury coach. Narrated by canal experts, Linda and Robert Barth. We will visit the locks and bridges in South Bound Brook, Blackwells Mills, Griggstown and Kingston and hear stories of the canal and its workers as we go! A portion of this tour is a walk along the canal if you so choose. Please dress appropriately for this 4 hour tour. Takes place every April. Hosted by The Heritage Trail Association.
Customized Tours: We also offer schools, clubs and organizations the opportunity to arrange customized historic tours. Schools or organizations can choose a geographic area in Somerset County, or a specific theme (e.g., “Heroines and Celebrities”, “Visions and Inventions”, “Landed Gentry”, etc.).
