Uncovering Somerville’s Civil War Heroine Arabella Barlow

Arabella Barlow, born and buried in Somerville, descends from the Wallace and Hardenbergh families of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites, embodying New Jersey history from the American Revolution to the Civil War.

On the grounds of Wallace House State Historic Site, enter a small Civil War encampment and encounter a New Jersey soldier’s experience of the Civil War.

Inside Washington’s Headquarters at Wallace House State Historic Site, see special exhibits on historical artifacts and research unearthing Arabella Barlow’s early life in Somerville and Burlington and social background and history as a New Jersey woman in between America’s formative conflicts of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
