The Head that Wears the Crown: Black Women’s Headwear Exhibit

From slavery to freedom, Black women have expressed their creativity and resistance through the crowns of their heads. From head wraps to “church hats,” headwear symbolized freedom, commitment to spiritual life, and a love for fashion that enslaved and free women shared. The Head that Wears the Crown explores the past, present, and future of African American women’s headwear.

RSVP in advance and pay what you can (suggested admission: $10). Admission is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Featuring:

  • Portraits of community members across generations modeling church hats
  • Selections from SSAAM’s collection of 20th-century church hats
  • Join us in celebrating this rich tradition by wearing your favorite hat!
