Hessians on St Nicholas Day: 3rd Annual Reenactment of the Arrest of Derrick Van Veghten
The Somerset County Historical Society presents the 3rd Annual Reenactment of the Arrest of Derrick Van Veghten by Hessian Jaegers, capturing Derrick Van Veghten on St. Nicholas Day in December 1776 as they sought a guide for military maneuvers through the Watchung Mountains.
The reenactment is based on the original account of Capt. Johann Ewald who participated in the arrest and features reenactors of Hessian Jaegers and a reflection on the colonial Dutch holiday traditions of St. Nicholas Day. A festive open house of Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Site follows the reenactment.
