Patchwork: Voices of 19th-Century Rural Women
Patchwork: Voices of 19th-Century Rural Women
Civil War heroine Arabella Barlow, a great-granddaughter of the Wallace family of Wallace House and Hardenbergh family of Old Dutch Parsonage, was born into the women’s world of rural New Jersey in 1824. For Arabella Barlow’s 200th Birthday, historical musician and balladeer Linda Russell portrays twenty-one different women from ages 16 to 70 in this one-woman show at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites. From words taken from actual diaries, letters and women’s magazines, their stories emerge: Bertha joyously remembers the all-night dances; Harriet mourns the death of her little girl; Lenore vents her spleen at “husbands” as she vigorously pounds her bread dough; Grandma Ickus reveals the memories stitched into her patchwork quilts. Patchwork is an exploration of the lives of rural women of the 19th Century. We hear them singing, reciting from their autograph books, offering recipes and remedies. Through Linda’s powerful performance, we feel their strength, their sense of humor and their passion for life. Admission is free. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for this outdoors performance. This program is part of a series made possible the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association with the sponsorship of New Jersey Council for

Irish Seisiun at Flounder
Irish Seisiun at Flounder
Irish Seisiun at Flounder Brewing The second AND fourth Thursday of EVERY month! That means its time for our Irish Seisiun! What is an Irish Seisiun? Unlike a performance, the musicians at a seisiun are playing for enjoyment as much for each other as for anyone who comes to listen. There are a core group of players, and others who drop in now and then. In fact, we never know who will show up or what instruments they will play—all completely acoustic and unamplified bringing the barn to life organically! Usually one person will start a tune, and those who know it join in. Musicians play until they feel like stopping or switch tunes. The origin and spirit of this music is in playing for dancers. If Irish dancers drop by to this seisiun, they will be welcome, too! Feel free to make requests if you know an Irish tune. To this group of musicians, virtuosity is less valued than the collective effort.

The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 The creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (during which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious “Stage Door Slasher”) assemble for a backer’s audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy “angel.” Comic mayhem ensues when the infamous “Slasher” makes his reappearance and strikes again — and again. As the composer, lyricist, actors and director prepare their performance and a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat, bodies start to drop in plain sight and accusing fingers point in all directions. An ingenious and wildly comic romp poking fun at the more ridiculous aspects of “show biz” and the corny thrillers of Hollywood’s heyday, the play is a non-stop barrage of laughter as those assembled (or at least those who aren’t killed off) untangle the mystery of the “Stage Door Slasher.” “…a kind of crossbreeding of Charles Ludlam (The Mystery of Irma Vep) and Terrence McNally, seasoned with a soupçon of Noises Off.” —The New York Times. “…enormous fun…Its strength comes in part from the sheer diamond wit and diamante showbiz glitter of Bishop’s writing. Even his corn is succulently served.” —New York Post. “…Bishop gives us a nakedly silly

34th Annual Stream Cleanup
34th Annual Stream Cleanup Join more than 1,000 volunteers across the Raritan River watershed to clean up our waterways for Raritan Headwaters’ 34th Annual Stream Cleanup. In celebration of Earth Week, volunteers come together to clean up our rivers and streams, working to protect essential water supplies across Hunterdon, Morris, and Somerset counties. Last year’s Stream Cleanup was a resounding success and an incredible show of teamwork and volunteerism. More than 1,000 citizens removed 11 tons of trash and recyclables that threaten our drinking water supplies and wildlife. The impact of this extraordinary effort reaches beyond our watershed region – downstream to Raritan Bay and ultimately, the Atlantic Ocean. This event is fundamental in protecting clean water but also beautifies precious outdoor spaces and provides safe access for residents to experience the benefits of outdoor recreation.
