SUMMARY:We Differ As Rational Friends - A Debate Between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place at Hillsborough Library\, 379 S Branch Rd\, Hillsborough Township\, NJ 08844. \nJefferson and Adams were two of our Founding Fathers. But\, they were close friends for much of their lives. Learn their story in this performance from the American Historical Theater. Ages 12 and up are welcome.\nBitter political rivals and close personal friends: Adams (Peyton Dixon) and Jefferson (Steve Edenbo) discuss\, debate\, and sometimes decry the revolutionary storms they weathered throughout a relationship spanning fifty years. They recall their bumpy collaboration on the Declaration of Independence in 1776\, parting ways on its final content and even on the most appropriate date for commemorating American independence. They clash on Constitutional issues such as term limits\, freedom of speech\, Presidential powers\, the Tenth Amendment\, the First Amendment\, as well as the virtues and vexations of a two-party system. By means of this dialogue between their differing visions for The United States\, their contrasting views of human nature\, and their political careers that inter weaved collaboration and opposition\, our 2nd and 3rd Presidents find the common ground that inspired Benjamin Rush to dub them “rival friends”.\nThis is a debate\, but not one fueled by party animosity or reciprocal hatred. Rather it is fueled by a shared love of America\, seasoned with passionate\, diverging beliefs regarding how best to protect and foster the nation these two men helped to find.\n“On the question\, What is the best provision? you and I differ; but we differ as rational friends\, using the free exercise of our own reason\, and mutually indulging it’s errors.”\nThomas Jefferson to John Adams: October 28\, 1813.

SUMMARY:Artists' Eyes on the American Revolution: - John Trumbull's Paintings of U.S. History
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place at Warren township Library\, 42 Mountain Blvd\, Warren\, NJ 07059. \nThis is part 2 of a 3 part series. \nJohn Trumbull was an American painter and military officer\, best known for his paintings of the Revolutionary War\, of which he was a veteran. He has been called the “Painter of the Revolution”.\nInspired by the upcoming celebrations of America250\, this program will chronologically explore the artistic life of John Trumbull (1756 – 1843)\, including his works of art from the tristate area. Blind in one eye and a graduate from Harvard College\, Trumbull served in the American Revolutionary War\, sketching maps for the military and serving as an assistant to Generals Washington and Gates.\nIn 1780 and 1784\, he left for London to study under the American Benjamin West\, who encouraged him to paint miniature portraits and small scenes of the war. Trumbull went on to become one of the chief portrait artists in America—including creating portraits of George Washington—as well as the painter of huge scenes from the Revolutionary War\, four of which now hang in the United States Capitol rotunda in Washington\, D.C. The Declaration of Independence there served as a model for the reverse image of the current United States two-dollar bill.\nPresenter: Dr. Michael Norris got his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego and his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and has lectured on trips all over the world. He lives in Teaneck\, New Jersey.

SUMMARY:Artists' Eyes on the American Revolution: - John Singleton Copley - Painting Realism and History
DESCRIPTION:John Singleton Copley (July 3\, 1738– September 9\, 1815) was an American-born painter\, active in both the Thirteen Colonies and England.\nThis is part 3 of a 3 part series.\nCreated for REV250\, and including works of art from the tristate region\, this talk will follow the career of the greatest and most influential painter in colonial America\, John Singleton Copley (1738-1815). Showing artistic talent as a teenager\, Copley prospered in America by creating hundreds of portraits that were both striking in their precise realism and the importance of some of their sitters\, such as Paul Revere\, John Hancock\, and Samuel Adams.\nRising political turmoil in America\, along with Copley’s dissatisfaction with the colonies’ limited art scene\, brought him to London in 1774\, followed by a trip to Europe.\nCopley then continued to create portraits of the elite in England\, but also began producing something new—large\, realistic\, and dramatic scenes of contemporary history\, often accompanied by prints to bring their images to the mass market.\nPresenter: Dr.
