Then plan to join our seasonal historian for a weekday morning walk beginning at the Kingston Lock/Bridge House then along the canal to Rockingham. In addition to learning about the D&R Canal attendees will visit two historic homes along the way – The Kingston Lock/Bridge House and Rockingham. The group will walk along the canal’s bermside/railroad path and then hike up to Rockingham where they will be given a guided tour of the grounds and house by the site historian. \nThis will be a program packed with a variety of stories such as the surviving Millstone River powered grist mill that encouraged settlement in the area almost a century prior to the Revolutionary War\, the local taverns established along the main stage coach route between Philadelphia and New York City\, the bridge that played a role in the Revolutionary War and its 1798 stone arched replacement\, the events of the Revolutionary War that impacted the area and the part Rockingham played in the conflict\, the town that developed in the 19th century due to the D&R Canal’s construction and of course the canal itself. It promises to be a narrative rich program you don’t want to miss so mark the date and plan to join us! \nThose planning to participate are asked to meet at the Kingston parking lot promptly at 10 a.m. Be prepared for a 2-mile round-trip walk lasting about 2 ½ hours. Dress for the weather\, wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring water and join us for this informative round-trip walk.

SUMMARY:New Jersey in the American Revolution Presented by Author Arthur S. Lefkowitz
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE AT MONTGOMERY LIBRARY\, 100 COMMUNITY DRIVE\, SKILLMAN\, NJ 08558. \nThis program is based on the presenter’s book “George Washington’s Revenge: The 1777 New Jersey Campaign and How General Washington Turned Defeat into the Strategy That Won the Revolution”.In late August 1776\, a badly defeated Continental Army retreated from Long Island to Manhattan. By early November\, George Washington’s inexperienced army withdrew further into New Jersey and\, by the end of the year\, into Pennsylvania. During this dark night of the American Revolution—“the times that try men’s souls”—Washington began developing the strategy that would win the war. In this illuminating account\, Arthur Lefkowitz reveals how George Washington turned defeat into victory. \nDuring his retreat across New Jersey\, Washington reconceived the war: keep the army mobile\, target isolated detachments of the British Army\, rely on surprise and deception\, form partisan units\, and avoid large-scale battles. This new strategy first bore fruit in the crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night 1776 and the attack on the British at Trenton and Princeton. From there\, Washington took up winter quarters at Morristown\, New Jersey\, and moved into the mountains\, an ideal position from which to check British movements toward Philadelphia or north up the Hudson. The British tried and failed several times to coax Washington into a decisive battle. Stymied\, the British were forced to attack Philadelphia by sea\, and they would not be able to seize Philadelphia in time to support the British invasion of upstate New York which ended in defeat at Saratoga. \nLefkowitz relies on a lifetime of deep research on the Revolutionary War and close knowledge of New Jersey to tell this exciting\, important story whose impact rippled throughout the rest of the war.
