SUMMARY:Somerset County Juneteenth Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Somerset County Juneteenth Celebration\nSomerset County will honor 18 US Colored Troops (USCT) who fought for the Union Army in the Civil War and are buried in Somerville’s New Cemetery at its fourth annual Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday\, June 19. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of the Historic Somerset County Courthouse in Somerville. \n“Juneteenth celebrates the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas\,” said Somerset County Commissioner Director Shanel Y. Robinson. “It is thus very fitting that we use this holiday to remember and honor the US Colored Troops who helped save the Union\, end the sin of slavery\, and who were laid to rest here in Somerset County.” \nAs part of the festivities\, the Somerset County Commissioners will award the Juneteenth Leadership Award to Arthur E.D. Adair\, a Somerville native who has cared for the graves of those 18 African American veterans for nearly two decades. \nThe keynote address will be given by Director Robinson’s own father\, the Rev. Dr. W. Golden Carmon\, Sr. the Senior Pastor at Mount Zion A.M.E. Church\, New Brunswick. \nSomerset County Surrogate Bernice “Tina” Jalloh\, Esq.\, will speak regarding the County’s new grant funded project to uncover more stories of enslaved African Americans based on the deceased inventory records and wills filed more than a century ago by her predecessors. \n“Unfortunately\, one of the few reliable records we have of men and women enslaved in Somerset County are the deceased inventory records and probated wills of the people who enslaved them\,” said Surrogate Jalloh. “As the first person of African American ancestry to hold this office\, I feel a special obligation to bring these records to light.” \nThe celebration commences with music and mingling at 4:30 p.m.\, followed by the formal program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The program will include a poetry reading by Olivia Y. Altidor and live musical performances by Antoinette Montague. Music and entertainment are being provided by the Downtown Somerville Alliance. Elected officials of Somerset County will read the names and hometowns of the 18 US Colored Troops buried at Somerville. \nThe second annual Juneteenth Leadership Award is being presented to veteran Arthur E.D. Adair who since his professional retirement two decades ago has maintained the grounds of the New Cemetery on South Bridge Street in Somerville\, including the USCT graves. Mr. Adair is a descendant of Private Andrew Kline\, a Somerset County resident who served in Company A of the 41st Regiment of the USCT and is among those Civil War veterans buried in the New Cemetery. \nMr. Adair has been a community leader in Somerville\, serving 42 years on the Zoning Board of Adjustment\, including the last 30 years as Chairman. He also served in elective office on the Borough Council in the 1970s\, and on numerous other boards\, committees\, and commissions. He is a lifelong resident of Somerville and is married to Andrea Cahill-Adair\, Commander of American Legion Post 12.

SUMMARY:Raritan Valley Symphonic Band Annual Pops Concert
DESCRIPTION:Raritan Valley Symphonic Band Annual Pops Concert\nRaritan Valley Symphonic Band presents its annual Pops Concert “Broadway\, Hollywood\, and Marches” at Bridgewater High School – Free \nRaritan Valley Symphonic Band \nAnnual Pops Concerts – “Broadway\, Hollywood\, and Marches” \nWilliam Berz\, Conductor \nFriday\, June 14 @ Franklin High School 7 pm \nSunday\, June 16 @ Bridgewater High School 3 pm \nThe Raritan Valley Symphonic Band presents its annual Pops Concert “Broadway\, Hollywood\, and Marches” at two different locations for the first time in its 40 year history: \n(1) Friday\, June 14 @ Franklin High School\, 500 Elizabeth Ave.\, Somerset NJ – 7 pm \n(2) Sunday\, June 16 @ Bridgewater High School\, 600 Garretson Road\, Bridgewater NJ – 3 pm \nAdmission to both concerts is free. \nConducted by Musical Director William Berz\, the concert will feature a wide section of American marches\, Broadway show tunes\, and Hollywood movie music. RVSB members Frank Amato and John Hylkema will also be conducting. \nThe concert begins with John Phillip Sousa’s The Naval Reserve March\, composed by Sousa while in charge of the Great Lakes Navy Band program during World War I and dedicated to the officers and men of the Naval Reserve. \nSingin’ in the Rain by Nacio Herb Brown is from the 1929 Broadway production of “The Hollywood Music Box Revue”. However\, the song became famous in the 1952 film which featured Gene Kelly singing and dancing in the rain. \nThe Military Escort march was composed by the famous American composer Henry Fillmore under the pseudonym Harold Bennett. Fillmore composed pieces under several different names as a marketing scheme to help sales\, but this became one of his more popular compositions. \nRVSB member Frank Amato will then conduct selections from the 1971 American film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factor\, featuring the popular song “The Candy Man”. \nA Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch is a medley of songs written by the extremely successful composer of music for films and the Broadway stage. Included are “They’re Playing My Song’\, “One” and “What I Did for Love” (both from A Chorus Line)\, “The Entertainer” (from the film Sting)\, and “The Way We Were” (from the film of the same name). \nThe concert’s first half concludes with another John Phillip Sousa march: US Field Artillery. \nAssistant Conductor John Hylkema will lead Edwin Franko Goldman’s Chimes of Liberty to start the second half of the concert. \nDr. Berz will then return with Make our Garden Grow\, the final selection in Leonard Bernstein’s operetta “Candide”\, which was also featured in the 2023 movie “Maestro”. \nKarl King is one of America’s greatest composers of marches\, many written for circus bands. Gallant Marines was one of several military marches written in 1942 during World War II. \nIrving Berlin is arguably one of America’s greatest songwriters\, having written some 1500 songs and scores for 20 Broadway shows and 15 movies. The band will perform a James Swearingen medley of Berlin’s songs: Irving Berlin’s Songs for America. This medley includes “This is the Army\, Mister Jones\,” “Give Me Your Tired\, Your Poor\,” “This is a Great Country\,” and “God Bless America.” \nThe concert concludes with two patriotic pieces. James Swearingen’s To Honor America is a patriotic medley featuring “America the Beautiful\,” “Yankee Doodle\,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home\,” Simple Gifts\,” and “America.” The program concludes with another popular march by Edwin Franco Goldman: On the Mall. Goldman started the Goldman Band which performed summer concerts throughout New York City for over 93 years. \nMusical Director William Berz is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University where he served on the faculty for 42 years\, including 11 as Director of the Music Department. Dr. Berz returned to the RVSB podium in 2022 after previously serving as its Musical Director in the 2000s. \nRVSB comprises about 75 musicians from the northern and central New Jersey area. Band membership includes professional musicians and music educators\, as well as amateur musicians ranging in age from high school through retirees. \nThis concert is funded\, in part\, by a grant from the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Did we mention the bevy of beautiful showgirls? The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards\, including Best Musical\, and was followed by two successful West End runs. SUMMARY:Monty Python's Spamalot
DESCRIPTION:Monty Python’s Spamalot\nLovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail\, MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table\, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls\, not to mention cows\, killer rabbits\, and French people. Did we mention the bevy of beautiful showgirls? The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards\, including Best Musical\, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous\, uproarious\, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “always look on the bright side of life.”

Adapted from the story by Mary Orr\, on which the film All About Eve and the hit musical Applause were based\, The Wisdom of Eve is an engrossing story of an unscrupulous ingenue’s rise to Broadway stardom. When we first meet Eve Harrington\, she is standing in the rain by the stage door of the theater in which the renowned Margo Crane is starring in her latest long-run hit. Before you know it\, she’s inveigled Margo’s best friend\, Karen\, to get her an invitation to meet the great actress herself. From there\, it’s a short step for the clever Eve to become Margo’s personal secretary and then her understudy. Did we mention blackmail? Yes\, that’s in there\, too! Eve is determined to achieve Broadway stardom and then a Hollywood career\, no matter what\, even if it means leaving the wreckage of her friends’ trust behind her.
