SUMMARY:The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
DESCRIPTION:The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940\nThe creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (during which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious “Stage Door Slasher”) assemble for a backer’s audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy “angel.” Comic mayhem ensues when the infamous “Slasher” makes his reappearance and strikes again — and again. As the composer\, lyricist\, actors and director prepare their performance and a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat\, bodies start to drop in plain sight and accusing fingers point in all directions. \nAn ingenious and wildly comic romp poking fun at the more ridiculous aspects of “show biz” and the corny thrillers of Hollywood’s heyday\, the play is a non-stop barrage of laughter as those assembled (or at least those who aren’t killed off) untangle the mystery of the “Stage Door Slasher.” \n“…a kind of crossbreeding of Charles Ludlam (The Mystery of Irma Vep) and Terrence McNally\, seasoned with a soupçon of Noises Off.” —The New York Times. \n“…enormous fun…Its strength comes in part from the sheer diamond wit and diamante showbiz glitter of Bishop’s writing. Even his corn is succulently served.” —New York Post. \n“…Bishop gives us a nakedly silly and relentlessly convoluted murder-mystery plot\, with twist piled on twist till you have to give way and start laughing at the silliness… it’s hugely enjoyable.” —Village Voice. \n“MURDERS is the intelligent person’s kind of nonsense.” —New York Magazine.

SUMMARY:34th Annual Stream Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:34th Annual Stream Cleanup\nJoin more than 1\,000 volunteers across the Raritan River watershed to clean up our waterways for Raritan Headwaters’ 34th Annual Stream Cleanup. In celebration of Earth Week\, volunteers come together to clean up our rivers and streams\, working to protect essential water supplies across Hunterdon\, Morris\, and Somerset counties. \nLast year’s Stream Cleanup was a resounding success and an incredible show of teamwork and volunteerism. More than 1\,000 citizens removed 11 tons of trash and recyclables that threaten our drinking water supplies and wildlife. The impact of this extraordinary effort reaches beyond our watershed region – downstream to Raritan Bay and ultimately\, the Atlantic Ocean. This event is fundamental in protecting clean water but also beautifies precious outdoor spaces and provides safe access for residents to experience the benefits of outdoor recreation.

SUMMARY:'60s Rock N' Roll Revival
DESCRIPTION:The legendary Grammy® nominated\, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. Puckett had six top 10 hits\, including two #1s in the late 1960s. His band\, the Union Gap (he grew up near Union Gap\, Idaho)\, still wear the Union Army outfits from the Civil War era. They signed with Columbia Records and\, in 1968\, they had six consecutive gold records and sold more records than any other group\, including the Beatles. Hits included “Woman\, Woman” (#3 on the cashbox charts)\, “Young Girl” (#1 on cashbox and #1 in the UK)\, “Lady Willpower” (#1)\, “Over You” (#5)\, and “This Girl is a Woman Now”(#9). They played a command performance at the White House for Prince Charles and Princess Anne. \nThe Grass Roots had three top 10 singles\, six top 20 singles and 14 top 40 singles\, selling more than 20 million records worldwide\, in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Hits include “Let’s Live for Today\,” “Midnight Confession\,” “I’d Walk a Million Miles\,” “Temptation Eyes\,” “Sooner or Later\,” “Heaven Knows” and “Two Divided by Love.” In 1982\, their July 4th performance on the National Mall in Washington\, D.C. set an all-time attendance record of over half a million people. \nGary Lewis & the Playboys had the unique accomplishment of having their first seven singles all reach the top 10 on the charts. Despite 1965-66 charts being dominated by British bands\, the hits were: “This Diamond Ring” (#1 on Billboard chart)\, “Count me In” (#2)\, “Save Your Heart for Me” (#2)\, “Everybody Loves a Clown”(#4)\, “She’s Just My Style” (#3)\, “Sure Gonna Miss Her” (#9)\, and “Green Grass (#8).

SUMMARY:Songs of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Civil War heroine Arabella Barlow\, born in Somerville in 1824\, a great-granddaughter of the Wallace family of Wallace House who hosted George Washington’s winter headquarters and Hardenbergh family of Old Dutch Parsonage who served in New Jersey’s Provincial Congress and Militia in the Revolutionary War\, offers one of the “mystic chords of memory” uniting New Jersey’s contributions to the United States from the American Revolution to the Civil War. \nFor Arabella Barlow’s 200th Birthday\, hear the recruiting songs that urged young men to sign up to fight\, the anthems that inspired them and the musical complaints about the food and conditions they endured such as “Army Beans”\, “Hard Crackers\, Come Again No More” and “Goober Peas”. Historical musician and balladeer Linda Russell also includes the ballads about the yearning for home and the loved ones left behind. \nAdmission is free. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for this outdoors performance. \nThis program is part of a series made possible the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association with the sponsorship of New Jersey Council for the Humanities\, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nAny views\, findings\, conclusions\, or recommendations expressed in this series do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
