Students will leave with three to four complete short form stories by the end of the class and a greater awareness of how stories are structured and what makes them work. \nStudents provide: \nNotebook/sketchbook\nPencils\nMicron Pens\nColored Markers (optional)\nThe Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler (suggested but optional) \nAbout the Instructor: \nGene Kim is a Korean-American storyboard artist who has worked on shows for Netflix\, Amazon Studios\, Angel Studios\, HBO Max and more. He was previously a CG artist at Disney’s Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age\, Rio) and a CG intern at Pixar Animation Studios before then. Are you looking to create posters or work on a personal project but need more space? Join Kath Yarkosky for a two-hour open workshop held every first Thursday of the month! Whether a beginner or an experienced printer\, you’ll find a supportive community and space to explore our wood and lead-type collection. We have a Vandercook Universal #1 press\, a Galley proofing press\, and a large selection of inks. The workshop will provide various papers for proofing and printing. \nStudents provide:\nAny materials you wish to run through the press should be relatively flat. Suitable items include dried plants\, paper cut-outs\, clothing\, and stuffed animals (without their stuffing). If you have any questions about the materials\, please contact Kath at kath AT frontlinearts DOT org. Additionally\, bring a sketchbook to jot down ideas and take notes. This 4 week class will focus on creating multi-layer prints by exposing hand-drawn separations onto silkscreens. Students will learn every step of the process\, plus tips and tricks for perfecting the multi-layered print. Class time will include demonstrations\, one-on-one work with the instructor\, group discussions\, and creating a new body of work or experimenting with new ideas. \nStudents provide: \nSharpie Oil Paint Markers\, black each size\nPad of newsprint 11×14″\nPad of Stonehenge paper 11×14″\nPad of clear acetate 11×14″\nPlastic containers for ink (sour cream\, yogurt\, takeout cups)\nSpatulas or spoons for mixing ink\nSketchbook\nMasking tape\nYou own screens (optional)\nSpecialty ink colors (optional)\nSeparately\, Frontline Arts provides silkscreen materials \nAbout the Instructor: \nKristian Battell is an artist practicing in Jersey City\, NJ. She completed her Masters of Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts in New York\, NY. Battell always considered herself more of a traditional printmaker\, having a BFA in Printmaking and Art of the Book from Purchase College\, but the pandemic has shifted her practice to sculpture and installation. These sculptures focus on climate change and upcycling the materials that surround her in her everyday life. She loves bringing this practice to a wider audience through her installations and teaching about our impact on the environment and the change we can make through art. Battell has had solo exhibitions at the Montclair Art Museum (Montclair\, NJ) and Warren Community College (Washington\, NJ). Select group exhibitions include the International Print Center of New York (New York\, NY)\, Local Projects (Long Island City\, NY)\, SlowBurn (NYC)\, Mana Contemporary (Jersey City\, NJ)\, Art150 (Jersey City\, NJ)\, Ely Center of Contemporary Art (New Haven\, CT)\, Ice Cream Social (Port Chester\, NY) and the Montclair Art Museum (Montclair\, NJ). She has been artist-in-residence at ChaNorth\, Frans Masereel Centrum\, Newark Print Shop and Index Art Center. SUMMARY:Exploring Drypoint: From Drawing to Print
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 8th\, 15th . 11 AM – 4 PM \nExplore repeatable printmaking at its easiest\, most accessible form. This workshop will teach you these ins and outs of non-chemical intaglio printmaking—a centuries-old technique for translating drawings and marks into a repeatable edition of prints. Using simple skills\, artists will have the opportunity to discover the ease of quick and easy intaglio printing. Along the way\, artists may learn about basic viscosity printing\, chine colle and exploratory inking techniques. No experience necessary; beginners are encouraged! Enrolled artists will be emailed a small list of items and images to provide closer to the start of this workshop. \nStudents provide: \n– 5×7” source images\, printed or drawn in grayscale with full tonal range (including darks\, midtones\, and highlights).\n– A selection of scratching tools such as needles\, knives\, screws/nails\, and sandpaper/files. Many tools will be provided by the instructor\, so please do not purchase anything you do not already have.\n– An apron\n– An extra fine Sharpie\n– A roll of paper towels\n– A pencil\n– A notebook or sketchbook \nSeparately\, Frontline Arts will provide drypoint intaglio materials\, paid by the materials fee. \nAbout the Instructor: \nDave DiMarchi is a queer\, multi-disciplinary artist working in printmaking\, papermaking and sculptural book forms. Nurturing ideas into singular and editioned works\, he engages in a relentless material practice. As a multi-disciplinary artist\, he has exhibited works on paper\, installations and books in the US and internationally. In autumn of 2022\, he was announced as the Arts Council of Princeton’s Anne Reeves Artist-in-Residence\, through which he developed a practice of collage-based multimedia and print works. He also serves as the Arts Council’s Printmaking Studios Manager and Master Printer\, and is Instructor of Printmaking at Mercer College. DESCRIPTION:Tom Lamb will give a brief overview of the extraordinary life and achievements of John James Audubon\, along with what makes him the greatest bird artist\, and some of the controversies that surround him. Tom will also discuss why Audubon prints are so valued and why some publishers of the prints might be more desirable than others. \nTom Lamb is a retired auction specialist who started at Christie’s in 1980 in London and moved to Bloomsbury Book auctions in 2007\, and to Bonhams Book department in 2011 before retiring in 2021. He was always involved in book and map auction records. NJ based band\, The Martyr are quickly becoming recognized as the dominant powerhouse of the tri-state\, break-neck metal scene with their fusion of heavy guitar riffs with beautiful dynamic melodies and a maximalist edge. They are fresh off an opening gig with the national touring bands Hawk and Ghost Kid.
