SUMMARY:AVN Rummage Sale
DESCRIPTION:A Somerset County Treasure: The Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale \nFor more than a century\, the rolling fields of the Far Hills Fairgrounds in Far Hills\, New Jersey have hosted one of the state’s most cherished community traditions: the Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale. Held twice each year in spring and fall\, this beloved event draws thousands of bargain hunters\, collectors\, and neighbors from across New Jersey and beyond — all united by a shared spirit of community and generosity. \nHumble Beginnings and a Legacy of Service \nRummage (as those in the know call it) traces its origins back to 1923\, when volunteers at the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills organized a simple fundraising sale at the Far Hills Fairgrounds to support home health services. What started with just a few tables has grown into New Jersey’s oldest and largest rummage sale\, a cornerstone event in Somerset County’s calendar. \nFrom the very beginning\, the goal of Rummage has been to support quality health care at home and in the community\, helping older adults\, individuals recovering from illness or surgery\, and those living with chronic conditions remain where they are most comfortable: in their own homes. That mission continues today under the banner of Atlantic Visiting Nurse. Proceeds from the sale directly support home health and hospice care\, the Atlantic Adult Day Center in Basking Ridge\, and complimentary grief support services. \nA Seasoned Tradition with Something for Everyone \nTwice each year\, volunteers transform the Far Hills Fairgrounds into a sprawling marketplace spanning nearly two acres and two dozen departments. More than 400+ volunteers\, from long-time residents to newcomers eager to pitch in\, sort\, price\, and display donations that range from clothing\, furniture\, books\, and jewelry to antiques\, home goods\, electronics\, toys\, holiday decorations\, and more. \nShoppers arrive early and often stay all day\, eager to explore the vast selection of items and maybe uncover a hidden gem. Over the years\, remarkable finds\, from vintage furniture to original artwork\, have helped build the sale’s reputation as a must-visit destination for treasure seekers and nostalgic collectors alike. \nA Community Celebration \nWhat truly sets the Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale apart is its sense of community. Generations of volunteers and visitors return year after year\, not just to shop\, but to connect with neighbors and take part in a shared tradition that celebrates Somerset County’s generous spirit. Local leaders have recognized the sale’s impact: in 2023\, the Borough of Far Hills unveiled a commemorative plaque at the fairgrounds honoring the event’s century-long legacy of service and partnership. \nLooking Ahead \nAs the Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale moves into its second century\, it remains much more than a fundraiser. It is a living testament to the power of community. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning as a longtime supporter\, the sale offers a chance to honor the past\, support the present\, and strengthen the bonds that make Somerset County a vibrant place to live and visit.
