Weekend Walkers

Weekend Walkers: Demott Lane to Landing Lane FREE weekend morning walks along the D&R Canal towpath and/or nearby areas. Join us for our “Weekend Walkers” series of modest hikes along the canal towpath and nearby areas. Each section of the canal has a unique character and history which will be highlighted by our seasonal trail interpreter. We invite you to come enjoy some outdoor time with us and learn a bit about the historic and natural resources of each location listed below. These weekend walks will be moderately paced - at about 2 miles/hour - and range from 3.5 to 5.5 miles. These longer walks will take about 3 - 3 1/2 hours, progress at a leisurely pace and return to the original meeting place. Children are welcome but those under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Weekend Walkers will meet promptly at the designated parking areas at 9:30 AM. Registered participants will be contacted if program is to be canceled due to inclement weather, insufficient interest or other unforeseen circumstances. Build your own Scarecrow Big or small, frightening or friendly, silly or serious – build your own kind of scarecrow with Colonial Park Gardens’ staff this autumn. Bring your own favorite scarecrow clothes, your creativity, and we will provide the rest. Some scarecrow attire will be available on a first come first served basis. Boston's Tea: Explore the revolutionary words and world of Phillis Wheatley, early Black American woman poet and correspondent of George Washington, on tour of Washington's Headquarters at Wallace House State Historic Site. Salem's Tree: Visit our seedling of New Jersey's historic Salem Oak after its first full year of growth since planted by the Borough of Somerville at last year's Weekend Journey in October 2022. 12:15 p.m. Somerville Environmental Commission celebrates the first anniversary of the planting of the Borough of Somerville’s seedling of New Jersey’s historic Salem Oak, a gift for the Department of Environmental Protection’s 50th Birthday and 125 years of historic preservation at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage. Our experienced instructors will guide you through each step, ensuring that you leave with a batch of perfectly eerie cake pops. Don't worry about bringing any supplies - we've got you covered! Learn what a solar eclipse is, where to best see one, and how to view it safely.  (Recommended for ages 8-adult)

Laser Kids Laser Concert Sing along to a fun playlist while lasers dance on the dome overhead.  Songs include “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, “Levitating” by Dua Lipa, and “Can’t Stop this Feeling” by Justin Timberlake. (Recommended for ages 6-12)

The Sky Above (sensory-friendly)

The Sky Above (sensory-friendly) A special astronomy and music show designed for families with children on the Autism spectrum or those with developmental disabilities. These sensory-friendly shows, which are appropriate for audiences of all ages, will provide a comfortable and judgment-free space that is welcoming to all families. During the show, the doors will remain open so children may freely leave and return if they choose. Lights will be left dim (instead of dark) and the audio will be lowered and kept at a consistent level.  “The Sky Above” show includes music, laser lights, stories, and information about the planets, the Moon and constellations. Content is presented on a kindergarten level.

A Very Special Evening in the Barn with Brooks Hubbard and Jay Nash A very special evening with Brooks Hubbard and Jay Nash in the historic barn at the Ross Farm A limited number of tickets is available for the concert in the barn at the Ross Farm, co-headlined by Brooks Hubbard and Jay Nash, on Saturday, Oct. 7! Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the music starts at 6 p.m. Brooks Hubbard is a national touring independent artist from the mountains of rural New England. Since the age of three, his connection with music has led him on a path of continuous growth, both as an artist and human being. From writing songs about the Iraq war at age fifteen to recording with members of Jackson Browne & James Taylors’ bands, countless house shows and concert venues , to opening for artists like KT Tunstall, Robert Cray, Reckless Kelly, Matt Mays, and Stephen Kellogg. Brooks has put in his 10,000 hours and then some to become a powerful singer, songwriter, and entertainer. He is a Ross Farm favorite and we're excited to have him back this fall!
