Jeff Hersch, July Artist of the Month at Gallery on Main

July 1 - July 31
NJ United States + Google Map
FREE

SOMERVILLE — In July, Gallery on Main's Artist of the Month series features collage by New Jersey-based artist Jeff Hersch. His work will be on view, and available for purchase, from July 1 through 31, 2022. Meet the artist at a free opening reception on Saturday, July 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Jeff Hersch provides what he calls “analog collages for the modern being.” Like his thoughts, these pieces are often constructed in short, frantic spurts of energy, with bursts of self-doubt, though calm and subtle. These pieces represent Hersch’s “everyday observations and conclusions about the vast world that erratically suffocates us, with little time for a quick escape or chance to relax, as we are currently inhabiting an advanced state of infinite stimulus.” His works, says the artist, “lend themselves to your own interpretation of meaning—if any—but should also serve as inspiration and demonstrate the simple notion that you, too, can and should create something, anything, on a regular basis.” When he’s not hunched over his desk cutting and gluing clippings, Hersch finds the time to play in bands (Glazer, Civic Mimic, Postman Agitator) and volunteer as the executive director of Flemington DIY, a non-profit community arts space

“Performing Patriotism” at Farmstead Arts

July 3 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
NJ United States + Google Map
$20

Hear history come to life through popular music listened to by our founding fathers, as performed by Erik and Eliza Lichak! Step back in time - just for a little while - for an Independence Day concert celebration at Farmstead Arts. For several years, Erik and Eliza have been researching the sights and sounds of the late 18th century and faithfully recreating music, clothing, cosmetics, and hairstyles of the time period. To even further bring their audience into the past, they use a combination of reproduction and original musical instruments, music books, accessories, and more. All of the clothing worn is entirely correct to the represented era: from the hand-sewn top and inside seams to the way the garments are tailored; some of their clothing even use original or antique trims in order to best give an impression of our history. Showtime is 2pm with light refreshments to follow. This program has been made possible in part by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission. .
