Stanley Gavidia, June Artist of the Month

This June, Gallery on Main's Artist of the Month series features oil paintings by Bloomfield, New Jersey-based artist Stanley Gavidia. His work will be on view, and available for purchase, from June 1 through 30, 2022. Meet the artist at a free opening reception on Saturday, June 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Before moving to New Jersey, Hugo Stanley Gavidia Tolentino grew up in El Salvador, and he studied visual art at National Art Center of El Salvador (CENAR). He has participated in many collective exhibitions, including at Studio Montclair Inc, Artfront Galleries, Open Doors Newark, Bronx Pre¬ Biennale Art, Queens Museum, and Hamilton Street Gallery, among others. In his artwork Mr. Gavidia communicates knowledge through basic concepts of vitality and universal values. He also attempts to convey insight into the truth through an exaltation of the mind or the soul. Says the artist, “I can't say anything concrete about painting, what happens on the canvas is unpredictable and surprising to me. Each painting suggests something. Once I sense the suggestion, I begin to paint intuitively and when the painting is finished, the subject reveals itself. I leave it to the spectator to fix meaning. It can always be

Garden State Watercolor Society’s “Small but Mighty” Art Exhibition at Farmstead Arts

Garden State Watercolor Society’s “Small but Mighty,” the 4th Annual small works art exhibition, will be on display June 12 to July 17 at Farmstead Arts Center, 450 King George Road, Basking Ridge, NJ. The exhibit features the works of fifty-two Garden State Watercolor Society artists with a total of 99 small works. Paintings consist of original water media (watercolor, acrylic, gouache, casein, or egg tempera) on paper, Claybord, or Yupo. Artworks measure 10” or less on any side. Paintings in the exhibit were juried for $500 in prizes by Lena Shiffman, children’s book illustrator and watercolor instructor. Fifth Symphony of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

The Brook Orchestra under the helm of Conductor and Music Director Thomas Vacca caps off the orchestra’s historic 2021-2022 concert season by highlighting the powerful Fifth Symphony of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Composed in a few short months in 1888, the work exploded in popularity during the Second World War, and has since remained as an audience favorite. Also on the program are Johann Strauss, Jr.’s charming overture Die Fledermaus, and George Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1. The Brook Orchestra has been in residence at the Brook Theater since 2016 with Thomas taking over the Music Director position in September 2019. Since his arrival, the size of the orchestra has doubled to almost seventy members, quickly becoming a highly regarded regional orchestra - bringing beloved staples of the symphonic repertoire to the historic Brook Arts Center. 9th Annual Flag Day Country Music Festival

On Friday night, June 17, 2022, the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068 is hosting its 9th Annual Flag Day Country Music Festival featuring the E~Boro Bandits on the grounds of the Somerset County Courthouse in downtown Somerville, N.J. from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The E~Boro Bandits will deliver a rousing fiddle and pedal steel playing tribute to your favorite country artists! The Lord Stirling Theater Company will perform “Cobb” in the English Barn Theater at the Farmstead Arts Center, 450 King George Road, Basking Ridge, NJ. “Cobb” will open on Friday, June 17, at 7:30PM, with additional performances on June 18 at 7:30PM, June 19 at 4:00PM, June 24 and 25 at 7:30PM, and June 26 at 4:00PM. Tickets are $25 general admission, $23 for seniors (65 and over) and students, $20 for Farmstead Arts members, and $15 for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased online at https://farmsteadartscenter.org or at the door (cash only). “Cobb” by Lee Blessing examines the character of controversial baseball legend Ty Cobb at three different stages of his life—The Peach, aged nineteen, at the beginning of his long career with the Detroit Tigers; Ty, a shrewd investor in his early forties, at the end of his playing days; and Mr. Cobb, an elderly man hoping to secure a positive legacy, at the point of death from cancer. These different versions contend with each other over who Ty Cobb really was and what he represented. Oscar Charleston, a player in the Negro Leagues who was dubbed the “Black Cobb” by the press, appears as a challenge
