Exhibition: Phillip T. Baker, May Artist of the Month

This May, Gallery on Main's Artist of the Month series features “Rock N’ Roll” paintings by New Jersey-based artist Phillip T. Baker. His work will be on view, and available for purchase, from May 1 through 31, 2022. Meet the artist at a free opening reception on Saturday, May 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Phillip Baker, who started painting at a young age, says, “I would paint anything I could get my hands on. Overnight I went from painting Bozo the Clown to painting Alice Cooper, after seeing him on Wolfman Jack’s Midnight Special. Music and art have inspired him his whole life. As he got older and started attending concerts, says Baker, “huge banners were permitted at concert venues, and I often painted a bed-sheet banner of the bands preforming that evening. To whomever is responsible for outlawing banners at concerts, I sincerely thank you! This is how my career of painting canvas was started.” Baker proudly notes that the name “Rock N’ Roll Painter” was bestowed on him by Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler. He first met Tyler in the 1980s, when he painted a 42-by-60-inch portrait of the musician the gained him entrance to Tyler’s private birthday

Theda Sandiford: Joyful Resistance showcases the work of award-winning self-taught fiber and installation artist Theda Sandiford, based in Jersey City, NJ. Using racial trauma as a starting point, Sandiford juxtaposes various fibers with a variety of found materials using free form weaving, coiling, knotting, crochet, and jewelry making techniques. Meticulously collected materials and community donations, transformed by their collective memory become “social fabric,” weaving together contemporary issues and personal narratives. Debra Samdperil: Layered Conversations presents the work of artist Debra Samdperil. Samdperil‘s painting explores current and past personal stories through engaged discovery, both unconscious and intentional – always questioning whether self-determination is possible. She works from her studio in South Boston where she now has the opportunity for time and focus more exclusively on her practice. Samdperil earned a BFA from Tufts, SMFA and has exhibited work and participated in residencies ever since. Jennifer Croson: New Encounters, Resetting The Stage exhibits the work of Jennifer Croson a New York-based multimedia artist. A graduate of The State University at Geneseo, with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Queens College, Croson has exhibited in numerous one, two, and three-person shows. As a dedicated educator who is Chair of the Visual Arts Department, she teaches courses in painting, sculpture, design at Marymount School of New York. Lily Colman: The Knots on the Underside of the Carpet presents the work of Lily Madeleine Colman a film-based photographer from Philadelphia, PA, where she currently lives and works. She completed her Master’s degree in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in May 2020, as well as a Certificate in Collegiate Teaching in Art and Design. She earned her BA in Fine Art Portrait Photography and Curatorial Studies in May, 2013, from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. Free Outdoor Armed Forces Day Concert

The Whitehouse Wind Symphony, a community band under the direction of Branchburg resident James P. Sheeley, Jr., will present a free outdoor concert on Saturday, May 21st at 12pm at the Field of Honor? at the Jacobus Vanderveer House in Bedminster to commemorate Armed Forces Day. The program will feature patriotic selections such as “America the Beautiful,” marches by John Philip Sousa, and selections from the Broadway musical “Les Miserables.” This concert is just one of many events taking place that day. From 11am to 3pm, the Jacobus Vanderveer House will also be open for tours, which will include a viewing of the new Pluckemin Cantonment interactive model and video. There will also be historic demonstrations, including reenactors from Lamb’s Artillery. The concert is free and open to the general public, although donations will be accepted to benefit the band, a non-profit group comprised entirely of volunteer musicians. Audience members of all ages are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs. In the event of inclement weather or public health emergency, the announcement to postpone or cancel this concert will be made on the band’s website (whitehousewindsymphony.org), Facebook page (facebook.com/whitehousewind), and Instagram feed (instagram.com/whitehousewind). Starman, The Bowie Tribute
