Exhibition: Phillip T. Baker, May Artist of the Month

This May, Gallery on Main's Artist of the Month series features “Rock N’ Roll” paintings by New Jersey-based artist Phillip T. Baker. His work will be on view, and available for purchase, from May 1 through 31, 2022. Meet the artist at a free opening reception on Saturday, May 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Phillip Baker, who started painting at a young age, says, “I would paint anything I could get my hands on. Overnight I went from painting Bozo the Clown to painting Alice Cooper, after seeing him on Wolfman Jack’s Midnight Special. Music and art have inspired him his whole life. As he got older and started attending concerts, says Baker, “huge banners were permitted at concert venues, and I often painted a bed-sheet banner of the bands preforming that evening. To whomever is responsible for outlawing banners at concerts, I sincerely thank you! This is how my career of painting canvas was started.” Baker proudly notes that the name “Rock N’ Roll Painter” was bestowed on him by Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler. He first met Tyler in the 1980s, when he painted a 42-by-60-inch portrait of the musician the gained him entrance to Tyler’s private birthday

Theda Sandiford: Joyful Resistance showcases the work of award-winning self-taught fiber and installation artist Theda Sandiford, based in Jersey City, NJ. Using racial trauma as a starting point, Sandiford juxtaposes various fibers with a variety of found materials using free form weaving, coiling, knotting, crochet, and jewelry making techniques. Meticulously collected materials and community donations, transformed by their collective memory become “social fabric,” weaving together contemporary issues and personal narratives. Debra Samdperil: Layered Conversations presents the work of artist Debra Samdperil. Samdperil‘s painting explores current and past personal stories through engaged discovery, both unconscious and intentional – always questioning whether self-determination is possible. She works from her studio in South Boston where she now has the opportunity for time and focus more exclusively on her practice. Samdperil earned a BFA from Tufts, SMFA and has exhibited work and participated in residencies ever since. A graduate of The State University at Geneseo, with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Queens College, Croson has exhibited in numerous one, two, and three-person shows. As a dedicated educator who is Chair of the Visual Arts Department, she teaches courses in painting, sculpture, design at Marymount School of New York. She completed her Master’s degree in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in May 2020, as well as a Certificate in Collegiate Teaching in Art and Design. Cross Estate Annual Plant Sale

The Cross Estate Gardens Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 7th from 9am to 12 noon. The first hour of the sale (9am – 10am) is reserved for NJHGF (Cross Estate Garden) members only. Everyone is welcome from 10am to 12 noon. The tables displaying the plants will be arrayed in the Upper (Rhododendron) Garden. Cash or checks are accepted for payment. Although there are temporary road closures in the vicinity, the Cross Estate Gardens are still accessible from Route 202 via Tempe Wick Road and via Hardscrabble Road.

On Saturday, May 7, the Brook Arts Center welcomes back - Comedian Mike Marino, who is affectionately known to millions of his fans worldwide as New Jersey’s Bad Boy. Marino has a tongue like a razor and a heart of gold. He has performed in every major comedy club, theatre, casino, and event center from New York to Los Angeles and around the world. His stand-up material ranges from cutting-edge observations of everyday life to his Italian family roots, which recently spun into a T.V. pilot called “Re-Constructing Jersey”. His comedic style has landed him guest appearances on The Tonight Show as a regular sketch player, The Martin Short Show, Canada’s Comedy TV, The Boomer Show, Wild Pitch, and Handheld Comedy Radio.
