August 22 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
NJ United States + Google Map
$15.00

Come to the Leonard J. Buck Garden to learn about the magical & mysterious life of everyone's favorite butterfly, the monarch. Cynthia Hedin, Somerset County Master Gardener will be on hand to explain why large numbers of monarchs are seen during the summer and early fall in the northern regions of the United States, and then great swarms are seen flying south to overwinter in more tropical climates. Participants will also learn about the monarch's life cycle, threats to the monarch in our modern day environment, and what we can do to protect this iconic butterfly from extinction. All participants will receive milkweed plants; the host plant for the monarch butterfly and the only plant on which monarchs will lay their eggs. Honeybees and Beekeeping: Program at Bernardsville Library

August 22 @ 7:00 pm
NJ United States + Google Map
Free

The plight of native pollinators and the managed honeybee has been recognized as a serious agricultural problem worldwide. Destruction of native habitat through land development, negative effects of pesticide use, and a parasitic mite that weakens the honeybee have all contributed to the dwindling of managed honeybee and wild bee populations. On Thursday, August 22 at 7:00 pm at Bernardsville Public Library, 1 Anderson Hill Road, Adele Barree, retired librarian and sideline beekeeper of nearly ten years, will share her love of the European honeybee, Apis mellifera. She will talk about some of the joys and challenges of beekeeping and a few things we can all do to help the honeybees. The talk will conclude with a tasting of several varietal New Jersey honeys as well as an answer to the question, “Do bees really have knees”? There is no charge to attend the program; advance registration is requested at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
