Paintings by Renee Post on Display at Bernardsville Library in July Bernardsville Public Library is pleased to present "Adventures,” paintings by Renee Post, in exhibition in the Community Room during the month of July. The show will be on view from July 2 to July 30, 2019. Ms. Post, a graphic designer and retired teacher, lives in Whitehouse Station. She paints both with brushes and pallet knives, and sometimes squeezes the paint directly out of the tube onto the canvas. “To me, art is an adventure,” she says, “I experiment and explore with brushstrokes, color, texture and lighting. The exploration is always moving forward. Starting with a figure or perhaps a shape or lines, my approach to painting is expressive. Feelings, empathy, and humanity drive me to respond to the flow and viscosity of the paint. The conveyance of a feeling, a belief or questioning of the same, is paramount to my creative process. Looking at art is a dialogue between the painting and the viewer. For me, it is exciting and risk-taking, like an exploration of a different shore.” Ms. Post has been painting for 43 years. Our summer program is designed to provide a fun creative experience for students entering grades 1st - 7th in the Fall of 2019, who are interested in exploring the wonders of theater! We offer a full day program, weekdays July 15 -26 from 9am - 3pm. Our dedicated and experienced counselors and director have designed a fun program which will develop self-confidence, self-expression, creativity and teach students to work as a team. The program is a great way to try something new and make new friends! Week One: Let’s Imagine: Campers will explore their imaginations and creativity through theater games, pantomime, role playing, and improvisation. Acting Basics: Campers will discover their talents using skits and short plays. Sessions will focus on stage movement, directions, voice, technique and auditioning. NJ Audubon: Photography Instructors’ Summer Exhibition at the Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery David DesRochers and Phil Witt, long-time instructors for the Sherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary’s digital photography workshop series, have been photographing the natural world for decades. Their enthusiasm for both nature and photography is evident in their images — ranging from landscapes to wildlife captured from locations around the world. They, along with this year’s workshop assistants, Cathy DesRochers, Becky Witt, and Jack & Ellen Moskowitz, will have a show of their nature-oriented images in the Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery between May 31, 2019 and August 26, 2019. There will be an Opening Reception for the exhibition on Sunday, June 2, 2019 between 1pm and 3pm where members of the public can meet the artists. This class focuses on the mesmerizing process of Paper Marbling, a craft that has a deep-rooted decorative tradition, yet plenty of room for discovery. Participants will create striking and professional-looking marbled papers that may be used in paper-craft or fine-art projects. Students will also leave with the skills necessary to prepare their own marbling materials and a few DIY marbling tools of their own. This survey workshop will cover the following: Water-based marbling methods, Suminigashi, Turkish Marbling, and Experimental Marbling. This is designed as an introductory experience in marbling, but will leave plenty of room for learning and experimentation even if you have some experience already.

Friday Afternoon Movie at Bernardsville Library: “The Martian”

On Friday, July 26 at 2:00 pm, Bernardsville Public Library will present a free screening of "The Martian" (2015), based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Andy Weir, starring Matt Damon, and directed by the legendary Ridley Scott. When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission. New York Times reviewer Manohla Dargis described the movie as “A space western and a blissed-out cosmic high.” Viewers are encouraged to linger after the film to talk about it.
