The Gaels’ Honour: Early Scottish Gaelic and Irish Music (Voice and Harp Concert)

« All Events

November 18, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

$15 – $20

The Farmstead Arts Center will host The Gael’s Honour, an early (15th and 16th century) Celtic music concert. The concert will be presented by award-winning Gaelic vocalist and harper James Ruff. Ruff has performed his craft across borders, from the Boston Academy of Music to the Canadian Opera Company to the Royal National Mòd in Scotland (where he was a finalist in the Gaelic Song competition).

Come join us for an afternoon of centuries-old love songs and formal laments sung in both Scottish Gaelic and Irish, accompanied by the high art-music instrument of the Gael: the wire-strung Clarsach. Played for a thousand years until its dénouement around 1800, this instrument, technique, and repertoire have been brought back to life only in recent decades. You’ll relish the bell-like tones of the Clarsach, bringing to life the music of Turlough O’Carolan and other harper composers, and enjoy its historic kinship with the evocative Pibroch of the Highland Pipes.
