Join us for tea and conversation as Julie Maloney, Director of Women Reading Aloud, conducts an up-close and personal interview with award-winning poet Grace Schulman at Bernardsville Public Library on Sunday, October 27 at 2:00 pm. Her memoir, “Strange Paradise: Portrait of a Marriage” published last year, as well as books of her poetry will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow the interview. Light refreshments will be served.
Grace Schulman received the 2016 Frost Medal for Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in American Poetry, awarded by the Poetry Society of America. In 2019, she was inducted as member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She has received numerous other awards for her work, including the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award, the Aiken Taylor Award for poetry, and Pushcart prizes. She has also received fellowships from the New York Foundation of the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Her work has been published in the Nation, the New Yorker, and numerous other magazines and journals, and appeared in The Best of the Best American Poetry 1988–1998.
Ms. Schulman has published seven collections of poetry, including “Days of Wonder: New and Selected Poems” (2002), “The Broken String” (2007), “Without a Claim” (2013), and “Mourning Songs” (2019). Her collection of essays, “First Loves and Other Adventures” (2010), reflects on her life as a writer and reader. Her history is usually that of her beloved New York City, where she has lived and worked as a dedicated poetry advocate all her life.
Julie Maloney, poet and writer, has been the organizing force behind Bernardsville Library’s popular “Tea & Conversation” series and is a frequent speaker and workshop facilitator on “writing as a life tool.” Her debut novel, “A Matter of Chance,” won the Eric Hoffer Book Award for General Fiction 2019. As founder/director of Women Reading Aloud, an international writing organization, she has worked in the arts as a performer and educator her entire life. Women Reading Aloud (WRA) offers writing workshops, special literary events, and writing retreats—both domestic and international. This April, WRA returns for the twelfth year to Sea Girt, NJ for its annual Writer’s Weekend Retreat. In June, 2020, WRA will celebrate its tenth retreat anniversary in Greece. Other writing retreats have been in the south of France and in the Czech Republic.
There is no charge to attend the program, but advance sign-up is requested. Register online at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org and follow the link from Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
