Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918, and even now, 28 years after his death, he dominates the American music scene. From West Side Story to Chichester Psalms, from Candide to the MASS, from On the Town to his three symphonies, he composed a canon of music that is broader, more popular, and more singular, than any other that has been originated in this country. As a conductor, he was famous the world over, a force of nature on the podium, just as he was at the keyboard. As a teacher, he pioneered the use of television for music education in his Young People’s Concerts. As a public personality, he was widely known as an often outspoken social activist. On Sunday, November 4, at Pingry School, Stephen Sands leads the Somerset Hills Chorus in an orchestral and choral salute to New York’s greatest musician, featuring a performance of Chichester Psalms and excerpts from West Side Story and Candide.
