On Friday, February 22 at 2:00 pm, Bernardsville Public Library will offer a free screening of “Lady Bird” (2017), an American coming-of-age comedy/drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig, and starring Saoirse Ronan as Lady Bird and Laurie Metcalf as her mother, Marion McPherson. Lady Bird fights against, but is exactly like, her wildly loving, deeply opinionated, and strong-willed mother who works tirelessly to keep her family afloat after her husband loses his job. The movie is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.
The headline of The New York Times review last October was, “Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ Is Big-Screen Perfection.” A.O. Scott wrote then, “I wish I could convey to you just how thrilling this movie is…[It evokes] the bittersweet feeling of having watched someone grow in front of your eyes, into a different and in some ways improved version of herself. In life, that’s a messy, endless process, which is one reason we need movies. Or to put it another way, even though Lady Bird will never be perfect, ‘Lady Bird’ is.”
The film was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time magazine as one of the 10 best films of the year. At the 90th Academy Awards, it earned five nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress (for Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (for Metcalf), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, “Lady Bird” won two awards—Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress (Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Ronan).
Viewers are encouraged to linger after the film to talk about it. Ed English will provide a brief document to start the discussion, and there is always a spirited conversation about character, motivation and style!
Bernardsville Library’s movie series is funded by gifts to the Friends of the Bernardsville Library. The movies are selected for cultural enrichment and for appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests in the community. The next film, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” will be shown on Friday, March 22 at 2:00 pm.
There is no charge to attend the movies; advance sign-up is requested, but not required. To register online go to www.bernardsvillelibrary.org and follow the link from Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
